LAURA PLANTATION LAUNCHES BLACK UNION SOLDIERS TOUR

Honoring nine men from Laura Plantation who fought for freedom

Vacherie, Louisiana: Laura Plantation is the first historic site in Louisiana to offer a visitor experience focused exclusively on the compelling stories of nine (9) formerly enslaved men who fought in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War.

From enslavement at Laura Plantation to full emancipation at the end of the Civil War, the tour explores their lives and military service as infantrymen and sailors who would later face racial and linguistic discrimination while they sought to obtain pensions as former servicemen in the Union forces.

Louisiana contributed more Black soldiers to fight for the Union than any other state in the nation.

Laura Plantation is committed to highlighting the contributions of these Black veterans, their widows, and descendants to St. James Parish, Louisiana, and the nation, and ensuring that their legacies are brought to the forefront of the historical narrative.

The Black Union Soldiers of Laura Plantation tour will be offered several times a week, as follows:

Mondays at 10:30 AM
Tuesdays at 10:30 AM
Thursdays at 10:30 AM
Fridays at 10:30 AM
Sundays at 1:30 PM
